CoolSculpting™ is a non-invasive technology that is used to reduce localized areas of fat in the abdomen, waist “(love handles”) and back and thighs.

What is the mechanism for how Coolsculpting™ works?

The foundation for the treatment is a process called cryolipolysis, which means “breaking down fat through freezing.” Controlled cooling causing crystallization of components of fat cells, which leads to apoptosis causing fat cells to shrink and become metabolized by the body. The body’s normal metabolic processes enable it to safely eliminate the breakdown products of the fat cells. Because fat cells are selectively more sensitive to the effects of cooling than skin and other tissues, the fat cells are preferentially destroyed. Our bodies process the targeted fat from this treatment in a manner similar to the way fat from food is processed.

What is involved in a treatment?

There is no pre-medication or sedation needed for the treatment. An applicator is placed onto the treatment area. The applicator takes hold of the treatment area and precise cooling is applied. The treatment for each area lasts one hour. Patients may schedule as many sequential treatments as they prefer, but most patients choose to only have one to three treatments in one day. Patients usually read a magazine, work on their laptops for the duration of the treatment. Each treatment yields an average 20 to 25% reduction in the fat layer. This reduction of fat flattens and reduces the targeted fat bulges.

How many areas are treated and how many treatments are needed?

Depending on anatomy, the abdomen may be divided into anywhere from 1 to 4 treatment areas. The love handles are 2 treatment areas (one on each side). The back is usually 2 treatment areas. Since, on average, each treatment results in a 20-25% reduction in the fat layer, it is generally recommended that patients need 2 treatments per treatment area, staged at least 6-8 weeks apart, for best results.

What is the downtime associated with the treatment?

There really is no associated downtime. Patients can return to work immediately after the treatment. Some patients have reported some tenderness, subtle cramping and mild bruising for 1-2 weeks. Others have reported a temporary, slight numbing sensation for a period of a few weeks following treatment.

How long will the results last?

The results are gradual in onset and take about 3 months to become noticeable. While the results are not as dramatic as liposuction, they do last as long as liposuction results, as long as patients maintain whatever diet and exercise regimen they were utilizing before the treatment.

Who is a good candidate for CoolSculpting™?

Patients who would benefit from CoolSculpting™ treatment are men and women who, despite a healthy diet and exercise, are unable to shed the stubborn deposits of fat along the abdomen, waist (“love handles”) and back. It is perfect for individuals who want a non-invasive procedure that does not require any downtime.
