What is liposuction?

When we gain weight, our body quickly creates new fat cells, which then increase in volume. Diet and exercise may help shrink these cells, but they don’t disappear completely.
Liposuction is a popular form of cosmetic surgery that rids the body of these unwanted fat cells and other stubborn genetic fat stores. Worldwide, liposuction represents between 15 and 20 percent  of all plastic surgeries.
After the fat is removed, the skin attaches itself to the area’s newly defined contours. Depending on your skin type, the treated area may appear smooth and youthful or loose and rippled. Liposuction will not address cellulite  or other irregularities on the skin’s surface, like stretch marks.

Why do people get liposuction?

People get liposuction to reduce or eliminate stubborn fat from regions of their body that refuse to respond to diet and exercise. Common treatment areas include:

  • The upper portion of the arms
  • Hips and thighs
  • Stomach
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chin and neck (double chin)

Dr Sarmela Sunder  specializes in what’s called submental liposuction, which targets the neck area. In some cases, submental liposuction is paired with a facelift, chin implant, or another procedure to achieve the desired outcome.

Am I a suitable candidate for liposuction?

Although liposuction is a frequently performed procedure, it is still a surgery. It won’t be suitable for everyone.
In general, you are a good candidate for liposuction if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are in good overall health
  • You don’t have a condition like diabetes or restricted blood flow
  • You have a robust immune system
  • You don’t smoke
  • You have stubborn fat that stays put, regardless of your lifestyle

Your doctor will help you determine if liposuction is right for you.

What happens during the liposuction procedure?

Tumescent liposuction is among the most popular forms of liposuction; it’s the procedure of choice at Sunder Plastic Surgery.
Before surgery begins, you will be put under general anesthesia. Then, the procedure unfolds as follows:

  • Extremely small incisions are made in and around the treatment area. For neck liposuction, this is typically under the chin and behind the ears.
  • A cannula, a hollow tube, is inserted into the incisions and moved gently back and forth to detach unwanted fat from the treatment area.
  • Loose fat is suctioned out using a specialized vacuum or syringe.

The liposuction procedure is not painful, although you will likely experience discomfort in the hours and days following.

How long does it take to recover from liposuction?

Swelling and bruising are common side effects, so your doctor may advise you to wear elastic bandages or other compression garments to promote healing.
You can return to your normal activities as soon as you feel safe and comfortable. Generally, this takes three to five days. Strenuous activities like high-impact exercise are best avoided for several weeks.
Finally, you don’t have to worry about scarring from liposuction after your recovery. The incisions are so small and so discreet that they will not be visible once healed.

What results can I expect from submental liposuction?

After bruising and swelling subside, you will begin to see your results. The treated area should look slimmer and less bulky. In a few months, the full extent of your results will show: your neck and chin will be leaner.
Although the skin around your treatment area will still experience the signs of aging, the results of liposuction last a lifetime if you maintain your weight. If, however, you gain significant weight following your procedure, the distribution of your fat may change, reversing the slimming effects of your liposuction.
